Consumer Groups Warn Public of Cell Phone Industry Tactics

The cell phone industry is working hard in the final days of the legislative session to keep New Yorkers from the consumer protections they deserve. In fact, Mywireless.org is even soliciting community-based consumer and senior organizations to join their "grassroots" efforts to defeat the Cell Phone Consumer Protection Act. They also recently released a poll to state legislators claiming that, if passed, consumer protection legislation will hurt consumers and seniors.

A new Swedish study published yesterday has found that extensive usage of the cell phone for at least an hour a day over the duration of a long period of time increases the risk of developing a brain tumor by a massive 240 percent.

Washington, D.C. ---- The current issue of Consumer Reports magazine (February 2006; page 7) contains a section entitled, Straight Talk on Cell Phones for Children. Under the sub-heading, “Health Concerns”, the following appears:

“Studies looking for a link between cell phones held close to the head and tumors are inconclusive.  But, if a link is found, kids could be especially vulnerable.  Have them use a headset. (Emphasis added).

Washington, D.C. ----   A new study has been published in the February issue of the International Journal of Oncology by Dr. Lennart Hardell and colleagues showing statistically significant increases in the risk of benign brain tumors, especially acoustic neuromas, following the use of mobile telephones.   This study is particularly important because acoustic neuromas are considered to be a signal tumor for other types of malignant and benign brain lesions.  These tumors occur in areas with the highest radio frequency radiation exposure during calls.

Washington, D.C. ---- A new study was released today through the online version of the British Medical Journal.  Note that the press release accompanying the study is misleading, and phrases within the study itself lend themselves to misrepresentation.  Contrary to indications in the press release, the data within the study support the hypothesis that brain tissue exposed to the near-field radiation plume emitted by mobile telephones increases the risk of developing glioma.
